I am NOT a morning person. I wish I was. I wish I could say I like to wake up super early and get the day started. But I love sleep. Don’t get me wrong, I still get up because I HAVE to, but I’m always looking for something (healthy) to give me a nice pick-me-up in the morning to help me be one of those cheerful morning people. I can’t drink tea on an empty stomach because for some reason it nauseates me. Like to the point where my mouth waters. Coffee doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on me either- and I don’t consume it that often so I don’t think it’s that I’ve built up a tolerance. Maybe caffeine just isn’t the way to go for me. So I tried something new: lemon water.
I’ve heard how a glass of lemon water in the morning can leave you feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to tackle your day. Truth is; I was the type of person who would rather sleep in until the last possible minute instead of getting up early to prepare a healthy breakfast. That includes slicing up a fresh lemon to add to my water. BUT, part of committing to a healthy lifestyle means making sacrifices (i.e. not sleeping in until the last possible minute) and creating healthy habits. It wasn’t easy, but I am much better at getting up earlier so I can prepare a nice, healthy breakfast, as well as giving my self time to drink a glass of fresh lemon water to start the day. So now we’re going to get into the reason that you clicked on this post in the first place… What are the benefits of lemon water?
Benefits of Lemon Water
- Body and Skin Healing Properties. You’ve heard of anti-oxidants and how they are important in fighting damage cause by free radicals. Lemons contain high amounts of Vitamin C (which is an antioxidant). Vitamin C is also super effective in helping to prevent/recover from the common cold. Here’s my favorite part: Vitamin C helps your body to produce collagen, which helps fight fine lines and wrinkles. Who doesn’t love that?
- Aids in Detoxification & Digestion. These go hand in hand because gut health is a major influencer on other organ systems. If you are not digesting foods properly your kidneys and liver have to work over-time to get rid of all of those nasty bi-products that can make us sick. Have you ever had a kidney stone(s)? I have. They are NOT fun, let me tell you. I think avoiding kidney stones is reason enough to start adding a fresh glass of lemon water to your daily routine, but that’s just me. It can also help to relieve indigestion and keep your bowels regular.
- Weight loss. You know how fiber helps you lose weight? Well, lemons contain pectin; pectin is a fiber; and fiber helps keep you fuller longer. Ergo, lemon water helps you lose weight 😉
- Lemons make you happy! This is a really cool fun fact for you: The smell of lemons can help brighten your mood, reduce anxiety and depression, and help clear your mind. You can read a great article on how different essential oils can effect your moods in various ways here.
Have you hit a plateau with your progress? Sometimes making a simple little adjustment can make all the difference. I encourage you to try making lemon water your beverage of choice the morning. Even if it doesn’t give you that energizing pick-me-up like coffee would do, at least your nourishing your body and providing a whole slew of other health benefits 🙂
P.S. If you want to prep it the night before these fruit infuser water bottles* are great for flavoring your water and having it ready to go.
Have you noticed a difference since making lemon water a part of your daily routine?
