It’s that time of year again! The time where everyone decides they are going to lose weight, get in shape and live a healthier life. Let this year be the year you make that resolution and stick to it. There’s nothing wrong with starting over again for 2017, but instead of falling into old ways where you stick to it for a few weeks and give up, really commit to it this year. I promise you, if you are consistently doing the right things this time around it will stick and you will see amazing results. Take some time now before the new year gets here to set goals, make plans, and figure out how you are going to stick to your resolution.
To get started, you are going to need a piece of paper and something to write with. That’s right I’m making you take action, right here, right now. At the top of that piece of paper I want you to write down 3-5 goals you want to accomplish in 2017; be specific and realistic. Now take each of those goals and break it down into 90-day goals. Reaching smaller milestones make goals seem more reachable and when you hit those goals it provides motivation to keep going. So, for each of those 90 day goals write down what actions you are going to do to achieve those goals. Having a goal is awesome, but until you have a specific plan and begin to take action those goals will remain just words on that piece of paper. Repeat this process for all of the goals you wish to achieve in 2017.
2017 Goal: Lose 50 pounds
90 day goal: lose 15 pounds
Action: meal prep
workout 3 days a week
hit 10,000 steps a day
Then set another goal and action plan for the next 90 days, and the next, all the way up until you have a plan for the full year.
Need some ideas on how you can take action? Obviously this is going to be different for everybody, but lets use weight loss as an example since this is one of the most popular new years resolutions. What specific steps can you take? You can hire a trainer, a dietitian, invest in books on healthy cooking or workout DVD’s, or take a healthy cooking class. Can’t afford to hire a professional or buy books or DVD’s? Youtube is filled with diet and workout advice and it’s all for free.
If I can make one suggestion regarding your goals it would be to include a self-development component. It may not sound like a priority, but trust me it is. In one of my earlier posts, I touched on how important it is to be mentally strong in order obtain results, and self-development will teach you exactly that. It will teach you how to be more productive, be less stressed, how to make time for the things you want to do, not just what you have to do, and it will teach you to love your life. Sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it?
Give yourself the gift of truly enjoying every aspect of your life this year by setting goals, reaching them, and becoming healthier inside and out. Remember to be consistent and patient; you’ve developed these habits over years and it will take time to replace the old habits with new ones.
